Odansetron

5-HT3 Receptor Antagonist – Antiemetic Agent

Overview

Ondansetron is a prescription medication used to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting associated with a variety of clinical scenarios. It works by selectively blocking serotonin (5-HT3) receptors both centrally in the chemoreceptor trigger zone of the brain and peripherally in the gastrointestinal tract, where serotonin plays a key role in triggering nausea.

It is well-tolerated, fast-acting, and often used as part of supportive care in aesthetic medicine, hormone therapy, post-procedure management, and wellness programs.

Primary Indications

  • Prevention of nausea/vomiting due to:
    • IV sedation or aesthetic procedures
    • GLP-1 medications (e.g., Semaglutide)
    • Hormonal therapy or peptide regimens
    • Post-laser or PRF treatments for sensitive clients
    • Motion sickness or vestibular instability
  • Medical and wellness settings:
    • Migraine-associated nausea
    • Postoperative recovery
    • GI upset related to travel, illness, or medication transitions

Formulations Available

  • Oral Tablets: 4 mg or 8 mg
  • ODT (Orally Disintegrating Tablets): Dissolve quickly without water — ideal for rapid relief
  • IV or IM Injection: Reserved for clinical settings
  • Liquid Form: Available for pediatric or sensitive populations

Typical Dosing

  • Standard Adult Dose:
  • 4 mg to 8 mg every 8 hours as needed
  • For GLP-1 Support or Wellness Use:
  • Often prescribed 8 mg orally, to be taken 30–60 minutes before trigger (e.g., injection day or travel)

Onset & Duration

  • Onset of Action: Within 30 minutes orally
  • Duration: Up to 8–12 hours of symptom control
